Author of Integrity in a Box of Chocolates, Joan Koonce is a Professor and Financial Planning Specialist at the University of Georgia. Joan teaches financial planning principles to others through seminars, trainings and published research and educational materials. She received her Bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University, and her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University. She currently lives in Athens, Georgia. She has one son, Carlus Koonce. Her desire is to encourage, motivate and inspire others to overcome any obstacles they face and reach their full potential in life.
Joan grew up in rural North Carolina with six sisters and three brothers. Her parents were sharecroppers and had very little education. The landlord provided the family a $50 per month stipend and a small, four-room home that was barely inhabitable.
Joan had a difficult and painful childhood, but she overcame many obstacles. After graduating from high school, she worked several dead-end jobs before deciding to go to college. She received her B.S. degree from North Carolina Central University, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University in Consumer Economics with a minor in Business Finance.
Although Joan had accomplished a great deal by the world’s standards, her greatest accomplishment was not realized until after she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior because this is when her journey to wholeness began. As her relationship with the Lord grew, the pain from her past slowly disappeared. Through God’s grace, mercy, and forgiveness, her life was totally transformed.
Joan is not a stranger to trials and tribulations. She has dealt with many difficult situations such as the death of her husband and the addiction and incarceration of her only child. However, she continues to thank and praise God daily for what He has and continues to do in her life. She has a peace and joy that is beyond human understanding.
Joan currently resides in Athens, Georgia where she is a Professor and Financial Planning Specialist at the University of Georgia. She is a member of Cornerstone Church of God and strives daily to be obedient to Christ in her personal and professional life.
