Joy to the (Working) World

With all the words we’ve used to describe the new world of work lately, “joy” isn’t exactly one of them. After all, it means great delight, happiness, elation–words that don’t seem to reflect the modern workplace.
Amid extreme financial pressures, job security worries, increased competition, and ongoing changes in our offices and worksites, you might ask “where the heck is the joy around here?”

But I propose that there is great joy to be found in the working world –if only we know where to look.  Here are my four favorite places to discover your joy at work, this new year and beyond.

1. The Joy of Earning. Let’s just say it–getting paid is a joyous thing! While it’s wonderful to say “I’d do this even if they didn’t pay me,” earning money allows us to take better care of our families and ourselves. Why do we shy away from talking about what we earn in the workplace? Take a minute, look at your paycheck (or view your direct deposit online) and tell yourself, “Congrats–you earned it.” There’s no shame in having pride and joy around what you make–no matter how much it is, or how much more you’d like it to be! 1. Retire the word “retirement” from your vocabulary. Look it up: it means to “withdraw” or “retreat.” Words can shape reality, and it’s time for this one to go. Doesn’t “renaissance” or “graduation” better describe your post-career life?.
  2. Realize that retirement is a relatively new concept in human evolution. A few generations ago, before social security and full-time leisure became culturally embedded as the “norm,” elders remained productive members of society, relied upon for their insight, wisdom and skills. Read More→

We all know how difficult it is to get the men in our lives (including ourselves!) to go to the doctor. But the longer they put it off, the more they put themselves at risk for tons of serious diseases—including prostate cancer.

More men get diagnosed with prostate cancer per year than women do with breast cancer, and yet men still tend to keep the topic under wraps. Well, no more, says Norris Beren! A top CEO and cancer survivor, Norris will educate, enlighten and inspire Living Fully After 40 Radio listeners who may be battling with the disease (or know someone who is). With more cases being diagnosed every day, it’s time to get this topic out in the open where it belongs—and Norris is here to do just that Read More→

HELP Committee Will Continue to Investigate PBGC Management and Oversight

WASHINGTON – Today Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), Chairman of the Special Committee on Aging, and Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a report written by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) Inspector General Rebecca Batts on the continuing financial and organizational problems facing the agency.  The report, requested by Kohl as a follow-up to a May 2009 Aging hearing, reinforces the Senators’ concern over the PBGC’s capability to fulfill its mission to insure the pensions of nearly 44 million Americans.  Read More→

(ARA) – A new career is often replacing the choice of retirement for many baby boomers, who have plenty of experience and resources to make entrepreneurship very successful.

With baby boomers living healthier and longer lives, they are no longer following traditional retirement paths and instead are seeking second and third careers. There’s been a shift away from lifetime jobs with long-term employment – with a noticeable drop among people ages 35 to 64 years old during the past 50 years, according to the 2009 Sherpa Executive Coaching Study. The US Thanksgiving holiday comes and goes so quickly, so let’s just assume we’ve done a good job of expressing thanks for the biggies: our families, friends, and close colleagues; the men and women serving and protecting our communities and countries; our farmers and factory workers providing us with safe food and products; and those who ensure we get safely back and forth from work, school, and home each day. Whew!

With a list that comprehensive, who did we miss? What did we forget to be thankful for this season? Here are the five I’m betting you forgot: Read More→
